A thread on a wine lovers site recently confirmed something I had long suspected. As you get older the strain of eating a large meal and drinking a lot of wine takes its toll on the body, and after late session its common to wake up in the middle of the night totally covered in sweat. Has happened to a lot of people and there are 2 basic cures. First if to drink a large amount of water and take an aspirin before you go to sleep, but in a drunken state, this can prove difficult. Other cure, and the one I prefer, is to eat and drink earlier. Having a 7 course meal, with a couple of bottles of wine doesn’t seem to be a problem if you start at 12 am. While that’s a great time to eat, even better I think would be an 8 o’clock start. Now its difficult to eat at top restaurants at that time, but still a bit of luxury can be found at that time if you try hard enough. And so it was we arrived at the Atlantic hotel for our 9 am reservation. Reason for booking at this time is all to do with location. The breakfast is served on the 7th floor and there are 4 tables outside on the balcony that have a lovely view of the
centre of Rotterdam. Great atmosphere, and a good breakfast. Its always buffets in hotels, but unlike a café where there is a limited selection, the breakfast bars at good hotels contain everything. Thus we had a bowl of salad, a couple of bowls of fruit, lots of bacon and really good chipolata sausages, pancakes, eggs, lots of different breads etc. All this was washed sown with various fruit juices, tea and coffee. Obviously this is one meal in the day where alcohol doesn’t fit in. Still overall it was very enjoyable and a nice way to start a lazy weekend. Price here was 16 Euro p.p. which is expensive compared to the cafes, but I think it was fair value for what we had.
